Hey there, ink enthusiasts! As we soak up the summer sun, it’s essential to give some extra TLC to our beloved tattoos. Whether you’re rocking a traditional anchor or a vibrant neotraditional masterpiece, here are some tips to keep your ink looking fresh and fabulous all season long.

Sun’s Out, Sunscreen On!

First things first – sunscreen is your tattoo’s best friend. Those UV rays can be a bit of a buzzkill for your ink’s vibrancy, so slather on a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Make sure to cover your tattooed area generously and reapply every couple of hours (whether you’ve been in the sun during those hours or not!), especially if you’re splashing around in the pool or catching waves at the beach.

Sidenote on the whole “splashing around in the pool” bit. Many tattoo artists recommend waiting at least two to four weeks before swimming with a new tattoo. You want to give your tattoo – essentially an open wound – time to heal. If for some reason you just can’t stay out of the pool, protect that new ink with a waterproof dressing like Saniderm or Recovery Derm Shield.

Cover Up with Style

If you’re planning a day of outdoor adventures, consider rocking some cool, lightweight clothing that covers your tattoos. Dark, tightly woven fabrics offer the best protection against UV rays, so think of it as a stylish way to shield your ink from the elements while looking effortlessly cool.

Post-Swim Care

After taking a dip in the pool or sea (again, this is not for new tattoos), rinse off with clean water to remove chlorine or saltwater residue that can dry out your skin and potentially fade your tattoo. Follow up with a gentle pat-dry and a moisturizing session to keep your tattooed skin happy and hydrated. There are tons of moisturizers to choose from, from Hustle Butter and After Inked, to the classic Aquaphor. Be sure to talk to your artists about their faves!

Hydration Station

Speaking of hydration, don’t forget to drink plenty of water! Hydrated skin retains tattoo pigment better and helps prevent dryness and itching, so keep that water bottle handy and sip your way to glowing tattooed skin.

Gentle Care, Happy Tattoo

During the healing process and beyond, treat your tattoo with care. Avoid excessive exfoliation or scrubbing; that can super irritate your skin and affect your tattoo’s appearance. We suggest sticking to gentle cleansing and moisturizing routines to keep your ink looking sharp and vibrant.

Wrap-Up: Enjoy Your Ink, Safely

Summer is all about fun in the sun, and with a little extra care, your tattoos can shine just as bright as the summer sky. So, whether you’re lounging by the pool, hitting the hiking trails, or chilling at a bonfire, remember these tips to protect your tattoos and keep them looking on point all season long.
