Tattoo Healing: Perfect Pieces Everytime

Nov 28, 2023 | Inked Body Art Tattoo Styles, Meaningful Body Art

Tattoo Healing is as important as the making of the piece itself, thats why today we are diving into some of the most crucial aspects so you can rock an absolute enduring masterpiece everytime!

A tattoo typically wraps up its healing in the outer skin layers within 2-3 weeks, allowing you to bid farewell to lifestyle restrictions. However, the grand finale across all skin layers lasts a more leisurely 4 to 6 months.

Yet, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to the burning question of “How long does it take for a tattoo to heal?” It’s a wild ride, depending on factors like tattoo size, ink complexity, and your skin’s unique vibe. A pint-sized, black-ink wonder heals at warp speed compared to a colorful mural. Your skin type, lifestyle, and overall well-being also hold sway over this artistic journey. Here, we break down the key stages of tattoo healing and what to mind during each act.

Post-tattoo application:

Post-tattoo, your tattoo artist wraps it up securely, either old-school plastic wrap or the “second skin.” Initially, it feels like a mere scratch, a tad stingy, showing off a touch of redness.

After a few hours, you may peel off the plastic wrap, but stick to your artist’s wisdom – they know their craft. At this juncture, your tattoo may ooze a bit as your body shields the fresh wound with germ-expelling plasma.

During this healing overture, treat your tattoo like royalty. No direct sunlight exposure, keep it pristine, and wave goodbye to sports and saunas – they’re off-limits to prevent inflammation caused by sweat and irritation. The same holds for swimming, with its bacterial bonanza.

Healing Process:

By the second day, your tattoo dries up, donning scabs. It stays tender, so minimize touch (if possible). The upper skin layers aim to seal the deal and wrap up the full healing process.

During this phase, maintain peak cleanliness for your tattoo. Stay hydrated, and shield your tattoo. Sports and swimming are still out, courtesy of the infection risk.

How long does the redness linger?

In the initial week, scabs form, and the redness gracefully bows out. If redness overstays its welcome, there might be an inflammation issue – consult your tattoo artist for guidance.

The itching stage kicks in as your skin heals – a promising sign of recovery. Resist the scratch temptation; opt for a soothing tattoo healing product. And, please, spare your tattoo from friction to ensure scab preservation and an unhindered healing path. Baths are a no-no as softened scabs invite bacterial intrusion.

When do scabs gracefully exit the stage? By the second week, the scabs perform their exit routine, unveiling freshly healed skin layers. The deeper layers are still on their journey, so swimming and public water escapades remain off-limits.

In the early healing stage, maintain a regular tattoo cleanse with an aftercare product, applying chosen healing cream for continuous nourishment. Sunlight is still a foe.

Tackling exercise post-tattoo:

How long until you hit the gym again? Post-tattoo, steer clear of strenuous workouts – scabs could tear, and sweat may infiltrate the tattoo. After a couple of weeks, ease into light activities like cycling, steering clear of stress-inducing moves. High SPF sunscreen is essential as the thin skin layer can’t shield your tattoo colors from the sun.

Once the outer skin layers wave their healed banner (around 3 weeks), you’re good to resume regular exercise. Yet, prep with aftercare and post-exercise tattoo cleansing.

Around a month later, your tattoo wears the ‘fully healed’ sash. The skin feels smooth, the epidermis is sealed, but the dermis below is still on the mend. You don’t need intense care anymore, but a sporadic tattoo cream dab won’t hurt.

When is it truly, madly, deeply healed? After 6 months, your tattoo has settled down through all skin layers, absorbing the colors completely. Now, treat it like regular skin. But remember, tattoos and skin age; regular aftercare fights the aging battle, keeping colors vibrant.

Dry skin? Hydrate with aftercare for that vibrant hue. Your skin breathes, your tattoo lives – fine lines thicken, shadows blur. The genuine tattoo outcome emerges. Remember your tattooed skin resumes normal activities – swimming, bathing, and exercising once the scabs are gone. A high SPF sunscreen is your timeless companion, preserving that tattoo brilliance. Skip it, and your tattoo may dim over time. Cheers to your well-aged masterpiece!
